Chapter Thirteen

Michael stormed out of the kitchen and straight out of the front door. Darryl shuddered as the old oak door slammed behind him. François bit into a pastry as though nothing had happened. Darryl had forgotten just how cold-blooded he could be. “Sometimes you disgust me.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Darryl. Someone had to put him out of his misery. If it was left to you, he’d be deadheading the rose bushes as they dug around him. It was an act of kindness.”

“It was an act of pure venom.”

With his appetite for pastries or spending any further time with François severely depleted, he grabbed his coat and went outside. He could see no sign of Michael. Instead, Darryl found himself wandering into the gardens sprawled in front of the old house. He hadn’t really taken them in before. With Michael’s plans swirling around in his head, he saw that they could be something breath-taking.

A noise had him turning to see François tentatively making his way over. Darryl scowled. “I came out here to have a break from you and your vicious tongue.”

“Don’t be like that. Come on. You always leave the dirty work to me.”

“I mean it, François. There was no need for that. It was cruel.”

François kicked an old pebble. “Not as cruel as building his hopes up just so you could fuck him.”

Darryl wanted to reply when he realised that François had a point. He had led Michael on, but it wasn’t as clear-cut as a need to fuck him. Something about Michael made Darryl want him around.

“You shouldn’t be out here anyway,” François continued. “You’ve only just got out of bed. I’m all out of nursing skills if you were planning a relapse.”

The suffocation made him want to scream. “You sound like you give a shit.”

François put his hand on his shoulder. “I do care. You know I do.”

Shrugging him free, Darryl went over to the flower bed that had once held a race car. He’d seen it in the photos before they’d bought the place. He wondered what flowers would bloom here in the spring if they were given half a chance. “We always think we’re right, don’t we?” he said quietly.

François gave a laugh. “I don’t remember us getting it wrong. Burlington Hotels is one of the biggest in the business. That’s down to a lot of you and a little of me.”

He could turn the charm on when he wanted. Usually, Darryl let François’ compliments wash over him, but today they were cloying. “We make money. Is that the only thing we were put on this earth for?”

“Oh Jesus, have you had some kind of epiphany while you were nursing your cold? I’m not sure I can deal with that.”

Darryl whirled around. “You’d deal with whatever I threw at you because you’re a parasite that adapts.”

François looked as though he’d shot him with his harsh words. He swallowed them down and put on a weak smile. “Come on, Darryl. We sleep with someone in every location we open.
